University Of Wyoming Launches First-Ever Academic Bitcoin Research Institute

The University of Wyoming (UW) has taken a bold step towards legitimizing Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) research with the establishment of the UW Bitcoin Research Institute (BRI).

What Happened: This first-of-its-kind institute aims to bridge the gap between academic research and public understanding of Bitcoin.

Dr. Bradley Rettler, an Associate Professor of Philosophy at UW, will spearhead the BRI as its Director.

The institute has ambitious plans to produce high-quality, peer-reviewed research on Bitcoin across various academic disciplines.

This research will be readily accessible to academics, journalists, policymakers and the general public.

The BRI’s formation comes at a time when academic Bitcoin research is facing scrutiny for quality and accuracy issues.

The institute plans to host a range of events, including an annual summer workshop, paper prizes, public writing competitions, outreach events, weekly seminars, special issues of academic journals and book workshops.

These activities are designed to foster a more robust and accurate academic discourse around Bitcoin.

Why It Matters: The creation of the BRI is partly a response to what some scholars view as problematic research in the field.

For instance, a 2018 study predicting that “Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C” has been challenged by multiple publications in Nature and contradicted by empirical evidence, yet continues to be widely cited.

Similarly, concerns have been raised about methodologies used to calculate Bitcoin’s energy consumption and misunderstandings about its technical operations among researchers.

UW cites several factors that make it an ideal location for the BRI, including its interdisciplinary academic collaborations across departments such as philosophy, economics and computing.

The university also highlights Wyoming’s renewable energy resources and research capabilities, as well as the state’s favorable regulatory environment for Bitcoin.

The institute aims to support Wyoming’s economic and community development through Bitcoin education, partnerships and mentoring.

It also seeks to prepare students for the increasing digitalization of money and finance.

This development comes as the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve and face both opportunities and challenges. The establishment of the BRI aligns with growing interest in academic research on digital assets, a topic likely to be discussed at Benzinga’s upcoming Future of Digital Assets event on Nov. 19.
