Crypto Enthusiasts Suffer From ‘Eye Burn’ After Attending Bored Ape NFT Hong Kong Bash

Yuga Labs, the company behind the Bored Ape non-fungible tokens (NFTs), is investigating reports of “eye burn” from bright light displays at its recent ApeFest event in Hong Kong.

The event, targeting NFT holders, was attended by approximately 2,250 guests, the Financial Times reported. Post-event, more than a dozen attendees have reportedĀ a burning sensation in their eyes and impaired vision on social media.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation,” Yuga Labs said, while also highlighting that the reports “represent less than 1 per cent” of guests and it is “too soon to comment on the cause.”

Attendees described the party as “very crowded” with “quite strong” stage lights. Post-event discomfort ranged from feeling like eyes were “being burnt with spicy chili” to a “dry and burning” sensation.

While Yuga Labs did not comment on the types of lighting used, images and videos of the event show a stage adorned in UV lights. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that UVC light can cause severe skin and eye burns.

Adrian Zduńczyk, a crypto analyst, reported being diagnosed with “photokeratitis over both eyes, accident related” after the party but confirmed no serious cornea damage.

Yuga Labs’ Bored Ape Yacht Club is a renowned market in the NFT space, known for its collection of cartoon ape images. Despite a 98% collapse in global NFT sales since May 2022, Bored Ape images still sell on platform OpenSea for about $55,000.
