EXCLUSIVE: Wait, DodgeCoin Or Dogecoin? Many Americans Don’t Know The Difference

Despite being one of the most valuable cryptocurrencies in the world, many Americans may still be mispronouncing it.

What Happened: Meme cryptocurrency Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) took the world by storm in 2021 with the crypto shooting up from under a penny to start the year to a high of $0.7375 and a year-end price of more than 17 cents.

The cryptocurrency has been well covered with the likes of Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk and Mark Cuban tweeting about the use cases and long-term potential. Musk recently sent the price soaring again when he joined a Twitter Spaces and declared “Doge to the moon.”

A recent exclusive survey by Benzinga showed that Dogecoin has strong name awareness as the second most mentioned cryptocurrency, trailing only Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC).

The surprising fact for those close to the cryptocurrency community would be the different pronunciations and listings for Dogecoin in the survey results.

When answering the question “Can you name any cryptocurrencies?”, answers from respondents included dogecoin, doge, dodgecoin, Dodge, Doge coin, and Doge.

Why It’s Important: The responses from the people surveyed show that many people could still be pronouncing Dogecoin wrong giving it a “dodge” sound instead of the “dohj” or “dohg” sound often used by industry experts. “Dog-ee koin” is also listed as a pronunciation on Dictionary.com.

Dogecoin co-founders Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus have both in the past said the official pronunciation was “dohj-coin.”

“I’ve pronounced it every way, though, do-ge coin, dog coin, doggy coin; whatever is the most amusing at the time,” Palmer said in an IBM Times 2014 interview.

Markus said he pronounced Dogecoin initially with a hard “g” sound before changing it to a soft “g” sound.

Many have pronounced Dogecoin with the dog sound given the crypto’s tie-in to the Shiba Inu dog as the mascot.

There is likely no wrong pronunciation for Dogecoin. Given a large percentage of Americans are pronouncing the meme crypto with “Dodge” in its name, auto brand Dodge, which is owned by Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA), could be sitting on a marketing gold mine going forward.

DOGE Price Action: Dogecoin trades at $0.09534 at the time of publication Monday afternoon and has traded between $0.4972 and $0.2269 over the last 52 weeks.

Data for this article came from an exclusive survey done by Benzinga in November 2022 that polled 1,000 people.
